Sim Bruce Richards, Architect by Mark Silva

An exhibition on the very productive artistic life of Sim Bruce Richards is now at the San Diego History Center in Balboa park. A local architectural icon among residential architects like myself. These photos are from my visit today.

A beautiful display of Richards’ work curated by my friend Keith York of modernsandiego.com, and so much more.. This is just a small tease of the exhibition, a must see for anyone interested in local San Diego modern architectural history.

Mission House by Mark Silva

An aerial view of a house I designed and built in Canyon Lake, CA in 1999 - 2001. Objective was to create a modern version of an old California mission. Seems to have been successful.

New Stair Concept by Mark Silva

A non-obtrusive, not blocking the view, stair sculpture which achieves the owner’s request of a sculpture that is also a stair. The warm walnut “wedges” float in the space as appropriately scaled and shaped forms for the architecture, and will take the attention away from the transparent glass stair. Coming soon in La Jolla, CA.

Wandering In A Wash by Mark Silva

Gateway Gallery by Mark Silva

A new personal project. Most architects design their own house, or office. I’ve never been able to do that, just never felt right.

Apparently instead of that, I’ve chosen to develop a commercial property in my small town in the desert, Ocotillo, CA, USA. The plan is to do something to benefit this community, which I love.

I’ve purchased a commercial parcel in the center of town, and plan to convert it to a boutique art gallery and art studio space, focused on local artists and this beautiful desert. I’ve discovered there are so many creative people in this amazing valley.

The existing structure on the site is a shit show. Its been terribly neglected for very many years. The grounds are the same. It will be alot of work to turn this around. Major cleanup project.

However, the bones are good. The history is good. The vibe is good. The last use of the property was a ceramic art studio, by a talented artist. I personally have a couple of her pieces in my home.

Stay tuned to watch the transformation of this very sad property, to a joyful new beginning for a community.
